dipping food on a stick into cheese and chocolate

at work, we had a fondue happy hour at a local restaurant this evening. my only previous experience with fondue was with a few friends and a hand-me-down fondue set; it didn’t go so well, because everything was lumpy and things kept falling into the pot.  but tonight was delightful. lots of cheeses. lots of chocolates. delicious. and we didn’t even do the hot oils and broths.

i’m quite fond of restaurants that allow you to help cook, until i realize that i’m being swindled into doing the grunt work for the restaurant. now i’m bitter.

When it comes to fondue, I don’t think you are being swindled into doing grunt work unless you do the hot oils and broths. That is why cheese and chocolate fondue are the only ones I’ll do.

Yeah, fondue is a swindle for sure. Though I think it’s rougher on the dishwashers than regular places. Those little tiny fork tines are tough to clean, as are the little pots and kettles. Also, you know their insurance premiums have got to be off the charts: raw food served to customers, open flames, molten chocolate. Maybe if you imagine they can’t afford to hire a chef because they’re spending all their money on dishwashing and insurance, you’ll feel less bitter.

I really like going to those fondue places. However, smelling like grease afterwards is not that fun.
