This weekend’s reading assignment
… is Posner’s recent opinion in Cavel International, Inc v. Lisa Madigan. Posner reluctantly upheld Illinois’ recent law banning the slaughter of horses for human food purposes.
Some highlights to look forward to: (1) the picture of the lion eating a birthday cake on page 11, (2) Bo Derek on page 14.

I didn’t really read this yet, just looked at the pictures. I am thinking of sending this to Omri for the food law seminar though. Posner and the banning of slaughtering horses for human food is a combination he’s sure to love.

dm, why would you say that? This is not a US industry. Horses are not food animals and you cannot sell horsemeat in the US. Why would you approve of foreign owned companies butchering our horses? The US doesn’t get a dime of their profits. The “all the unwanted horses” doesn’t hold water. If they were unwanted, the kill houses wouldn’t have to pay for them.

OB-S was totally psyched to hear about this opinion.

I printed this out last week, but I left the hard copy in the snack bar printer. This continues my long trend of printing out possibly disturbing material at the law school and then leaving it laying around for someone else to deal with. Sorry.

dear vicki,
please tell me how my statement that law is ‘fucked up’ indicates my approval of foreign owned companies butchering our horses.
in fact, i haven’t read the opinion nor do i ever plan to…
especially now that you’ve led me to believe that it’s not about horses at all, but rather about profits.
i have absolutely no opinion on this matter… well except that i bet horse meat is delicious. in fact, lots of other cultures - including some western european ones - eat horse. someday i’d like to visit that restaurant in toronto that cooks french fries in rendered horse fat. mmmm!

dm, since you didn’t offer any commentary on how the law is fucked up, one can only guess that you are in favor of horse slaughter. My view has nothing to do with profits. I only pointed that out because if there was a market for it in the US, the kill houses would have been US owned and that we should be outraged that we are being taken advantage of. Horses are not food animals and are not raised as food animals. You cannot buy or sell horse meat for human consumption in the US because it’s illegal. Yes, cultures are different all over the world. In the US, we do not eat our pets. We are not trying to change their cultures only stop them from butchering our horses. Please, go to Canada and enjoy your meal. Hopefully soon, the menus will not contain US horses. BTW-let us all know how you’re feeling when the bute kicks in and other medicines ingested by horses in the US.
