a thorough analysis of swearing

in general, i’d argue that the writing in The New Republic has steadily declined in the last couple of years. however, the following article is a pretty sweet analysis of swearing. it talks about the linguistic choices we make in swearing, the historical roots of swearing, and the cognitive process of interpreting swears. furthermore, the author swears a lot of fucking times in the article, which just tickles my fancy. enjoy.

acl surgery

fyi (to those that didn’t already hear) - i tore my ACL a few weeks ago at my family reunion when i landed poorly during a game of volleyball. turns out that i’m going to need ACL arthroscopic reconstruction surgery, which i’m planning on doing in early august. i’ve decided to chronicle the whole experience in a separate blog. the blog isn’t going to be particularly interesting, clever, or funny, rather, it’s just going to be informational about what it’s like to go through this kind of accident: from the injury itself, to surgery, to post-operative physical rehabilitation. feel free to check it out, if you’re so inclined: http://ineedanewknee.blogspot.com/

nerdy legal humor

While conducting research on trademark law for a project at work, I came upon a case that discussed “Kiss Proof” cosmetic products. I laughed out loud when the majority remarked, “We assume that ‘Kiss Proof’ means that a kiss will not disturb a woman’s lipstick, not that she will not be kissed.” Cosmetically Sealed Indus. Inc. v. Chesebrough-Pond’s USA Co., 43 U.S.P.Q.2d 1956, 1958 n.2 (2d Cir. 1997).

dipping food on a stick into cheese and chocolate

at work, we had a fondue happy hour at a local restaurant this evening. my only previous experience with fondue was with a few friends and a hand-me-down fondue set; it didn’t go so well, because everything was lumpy and things kept falling into the pot.  but tonight was delightful. lots of cheeses. lots of chocolates. delicious. and we didn’t even do the hot oils and broths.

i’m quite fond of restaurants that allow you to help cook, until i realize that i’m being swindled into doing the grunt work for the restaurant. now i’m bitter.

i’m considering an alternative career

laying bricks ‘n stuff

i’m hanging out in the suburbs of CT before i start my summer gig and my dad has kept me busy with yard work. i spent the better part of the last day and a half replacing the hedge around our front garden with a brick border. i’m seriously considering a career in masonry (not that freemasonry mumbo-jumbo either - the real brick-laying kind).
